What is a high temperature line?
High temperature wire is suitable for applications where the temperature in normal use exceeds 150 degrees Celsius. Applications for heat-resistant wire include internal wiring in furnaces, cookware, and industrial heating applications. Common insulation and jacket materials for high temperature leads include silicone, perfluoroalkoxy (PFA), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), mica, and fiberglass.
Factors to Consider When Selecting Heat Resistant Wires
The most important characteristic of a high temperature wire is its ability to withstand the maximum operating temperature at the point of application. Second, consider the current carrying capacity (maximum current rating) of the wire at that temperature. Note that for a given American Wire Gauge (AWG) size, high temperature cable has higher ampacity than standard wire because of the higher allowable operating temperatures. Other factors to consider include flexibility, abrasion resistance and chemical resistance.
Conductor material
Pure copper is easier to corrode at high temperature, so the high temperature wire adopts the following heat-resistant conductor materials:
· Tinned copper: suitable for moderately high temperatures up to 180ºC
· Nickel-plated copper: suitable for high temperatures up to 450ºC
· Nickel wire: able to withstand high temperatures above 450ºC
Common types of high temperature wires
Silicone insulated wire (180ºC)
You can use silicon insulated single conductors to achieve operating temperatures up to 180ºC. Silica gel can withstand 250ºC for short periods of time and has good low temperature performance down to -25ºC. This material is self-extinguishing and has good flame retardant properties. Addition of fiberglass jackets impregnated with high temperature saturators improves abrasion and heat resistance. Examples include Silicone Rubber Cables, Silicone Rubber Motor Leads (SRML), and Silicone Clamp (SF-2) wires.
Teflon (TGGT) wire (250ºC)
Teflon® is a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) originally developed by DuPont. TGGT wire has PTFE tape insulation covered with a high temperature sealant impregnated fiberglass jacket. You can use this wire continuously at 250ºC. In some cases, manufacturers place a ceramic table on top of the PTFE wire insulation (TCGT).
High temperature mica glass filament (450ºC)
Mica is an excellent high temperature insulating material. Mica glass (MG) insulation features multiple layers of mica and glass composite tapes, usually covered by a fiberglass jacket impregnated with a high temperature saturant. Mica insulated wire protects cables at temperatures up to 450ºC.
Thermocouple wire
Thermocouple wire uses carefully selected alloys to form temperature-sensitive thermoelectric junctions. Each wire is a different material. Standard thermocouple types include E, J, K, N, R, and T types. The only application for these cables is to measure temperature, if it is necessary to extend the thermocouple wire from the measurement point to the measuring instrument. Depending on the cable, you can use a thermocouple cable to measure between -270ºC and 1260ºC.
