The novel coronavirus variant currently spreading across the UK has a worrying new mutation, according to British scientists.

Analysis by British scientists found a mutation called E484K in some of the samples, which had been found in variants of the virus in South Africa and Brazil, the report said. Experts at Public Health England said the presence of such mutations in only a few samples of the novel coronavirus variant found in the UK did not mean the mutation was widespread and that vaccines currently in use should still be effective.

In an effort to control the spread of the strain in the UK, large-scale testing of the new crown has been launched in many parts of England and the government has imposed travel restrictions. Julian Tang, avirus expert at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom, said the public must comply with quarantine rules and reduce the number of confirmed cases to prevent further mutations in the novel coronavirus.
