Thermocouple wires and cables are used to generate or extend the signal from a thermocouple.
A thermocouple is a temperature measuring sensor consisting of two different metals connected together at one end. Thermocouple wire is used in thermocouples to connect from the sensing point to the cold junction compensation point (or reference point). The difference in millivolt output between the sensing point and the reference point provides the temperature measurement.
Different thermocouple types require different alloy wire combinations. Some of the more popular thermocouple wire and cable types include:
·Type E thermocouple wire (Chromium alloy/Constantan)
·J type thermocouple wire (Iron/Constantan)
·K type thermocouple wire (chromium nickel alloy/aluminum nickel alloy)
·T-type thermocouple wire (copper/constantan)
Thermocouple extension wires are used to extend the signal from the probe to an instrument such as a controller or recording device. Typically, multiple pairs of thermocouple extension cables are preferred in these applications. Extension cords are designated with an "X" after the ANSI thermocouple type, i.e. BX, EX, JX, KX, SX, TX.
