What are the different types of thermocouple wire?
This high-temperature wire is made of a variety of materials, including silicone rubber, PVC, FEP, TFE, PFA, fiberglass and other insulating materials.
Type K - Type K is probably the most common general purpose thermocouple type and has the widest operating temperature range. It is the most versatile thermocouple type because of its low cost, accuracy, reliability, and wide temperature range. Type K is suitable for nuclear applications due to its relative radiation stability and has a temperature range of -454 to 2,300F (-270 to 1260C)
Type J - Made of iron and copper-nickel wire, Type J thermocouples are similar in budget and reliability to Type K thermocouples, but have a more limited temperature range and higher sensitivity. J-type thermocouple wire is composed of negative copper-nickel wire and positive iron wire. It has a wide temperature range, large voltage output and low cost.
Type N - This type is nickel based. The N-type design, which is more stable and resistant to high-temperature oxidation, is often considered an "improved" K-type and is becoming more and more popular.
Type T - Type T thermocouples are stable at very low temperatures and are commonly used in cryogenic and ultra-low temperature refrigerators. This type of thermocouple is made from copper wire on the positive side and copper-nickel wire on the negative side. This type can also be used in laboratory environments and has excellent temperature repeatability from –380F to 392F (–200C to 200C).
Type E - Type E is also suitable for low temperature applications and has the highest sensitivity among ordinary thermocouples. Type E thermocouple wire is composed of chromium-nickel alloy legs and copper-nickel legs facing each other. Type E thermocouples are ideal for cryogenic and chemical applications with a temperature range of -454 to 1600F (-270 to 870C).
