Some common wire insulation materials on the market are based on PTFE and ETFE polymers. PTFE (DuPont trade name Teflon®) is a fluorocarbon consisting of carbon and fluorine atoms, while ETFE is a carbon, fluorine and hydrogen based material. The advantages and disadvantages of each are discussed below.

Considering the physical properties of these two polymers, there are some differences between the two. ETFE has 34% higher tensile strength than PTFE. PTFE is more flexible and has a higher elongation at break (66%). Plus, PTFE does have one significant advantage and that is the coefficient of friction. PTFE has a coefficient of friction one-third that of ETFE, making it a more ideal wire insulator in areas of use where wire harnesses may rub against each other.

There are also significant differences in the thermal properties of each material. PTFE melts at 327°C and ETFE at 267°C, but both materials begin to soften at lower temperatures. Therefore, the operating temperature of the material is lower. Additionally, PTFE has a limiting oxygen index (the minimum percent concentration of oxygen at which a polymer can burn) greater than 95%, while ETFE is between 30-36%, meaning PTFE should be considered in environments with higher oxygen content.

If you are looking for a material with high mechanical toughness and low friction properties, you should consider PTFE thread instead of ETFE thread. ETFE should be considered in high energy radiation environment.
